Ideas for my poster

Because In my digipack I have different images of the members of the band, I thought I could have a similar style on my poster. This poster below has the style I was thinking of, what is good about it is that it shows the different band members as individuals, not so much as a group.

Another idea along the same lines is to have a few different posters, with on each one a different band member. So therefore you are again giving the band members more individuality.

Another idea is to have a group shot of the band in a setting used in the music video. If i was to do this i would like to have a shot of the band in a relaxed setting, directly relating to the fun in the music video.
This poster below is very similar to the style i would want, very relaxed and fun.

Examples of Hip-Hop posters

Looking at all the posters of hip-hop artists, they all evolve around the main singer or artist. They are also all in very intimidating poses, and are all looking directly into the camera. In some posters, like one of the ones below, they are holding a weapon, making them even more intimidating. Also most of the posters are in black and white. The black and white gives an image of coolness and also makes them look sinister.

final digipack idea

For my digipack i am going to combine different shots of the band with bubble writing and strong bold colours. On my front cover i am going to have a few of the band members sat on a bonnet of a car, on the left side of the cover. Then on the right side i am going to have the other members sat on a curb or a bench. Then above them, in jokey-style bubble writing i will have the band name. The background of this will be a bold, bright colour, furthermore representing the fun idea of the video. For the rest of the sides i am going to have a different shot of the band members in different poses. The poses will be mick takes of the poses that rappers have in magazines. This trainspotting poster is the sort of idea i want, with different images of the members.

On the back i will have the lead singer, with the information and track listing going over the top of him,  with him therefore in the background. The background of all the sides will be, like the front cover, one bold, bright colour. All the sides will be a different colour, making it have that bright and colourful look i was looking for. The one single colour look is like the dizzee rascal cover i was looking at before, and it also has the sort of bubble writing i would like my my title to be in.

I also thought that, because my writing is going to be in bubble writing, i could have a sort of speech bubble surrounding the title. I would also have the speech bubble coming from the lead singer, showing that he thought up and wrote the song.

More ideas for digipack

Because my video is a parody, it represents fun and humour. Therefore my digipack is going to have to show this fun and humour. I have therefore thought of the idea of having a sort of montage of images and pictures that show off the humour in my video. Also by having a mix of images spread around the whole of my digipack it will have a sort of crazy feel to it, which sort of represents the lead singer. Also with the images i would also want animation, to give a fun side to it and also a vast amount of different colours to add a certain brightness to the album cover.

This coldplay album shown below has the colour combination that i would like to get on my album cover. It works really well as it stands out and so would look really good on my album cover.

File:Myloxyloto.jpg

This dizzee rascal cover below has the animation style that i would like on my cover. The writing on it is done in a very jokey style, and that's what i want on mine.

File:Dizz.jpg

This Dr feelgood album has the animation i would like to use to show the lead singer. The way the character is drawn is in a very funny and humorous way and that is the exact feel i want to get from my album cover.

Singles: the U.A. Years +

I could even have gorillaz styled animation on my album, like the style shown below. This would certainly give the album cover a different feel to it.

Alternative artwork

Because my video is a parody of hip hop I don't want my album artwork to be like all the other hip hop covers, i want mine to be different to the rest. This brought me onto kanye wests first 3 albums. These are called the college dropout, late registration and graduation. On these album covers they have a single character that is shown on all the album covers. What makes the character different is that it is a man dressed in a bear costume as you can see below.

File:Kanyewest collegedropout.jpg       File:Late registration cd cover.jpg  File:Graduation (album).jpg

This brought me onto the idea of having a character on the front of my album cover, a sort of alter-ego. Because my video is going to be comical, the character i choose would have to represent fun and humour.

Another different album cover is by the Wu-Tang Clan. As you can see below they have there faces covered up. What this does is give the artists a more intimidating look, like ghosts who haunt people.

Hip hop artwork

The examples below are of a typical RnB album cover. They all have an image of the main singer in some sort of pose, and most of the time looking straight into the camera, therefore making them look intimidating, which is the image they want to put forward.

lip syncing

In my video I am going to have lip syncing in the chorus. This is the lyrics, Thank you, Thank you, thank you You're far too kind hold your applause this is your song not mines. These lyrics are going to be quite easy to lip sync and are not to fast. I am as well going to have a bit of lip syncing in the verses but only a few lines so it is not that difficult for the main singer.

lyrics for song

[Jay-Z Talking]Thank you, thank you very much
For comin' out this evening

[Verse 1]
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you
You're far too kind
Hold you're applause
This is your song not mines
Thank you, thank you, thank you
Please hold your applause
For I just applied logic Keys keys open doors
Now I'm balcony, Opera, Black Tux, Binocula
Black luxe, Stop it I shouldn't be so popular
Name keep poppin' up Face keep poppin' up
On the tube I'm just watchin' Pacquaio box 'em up
How would I know HBO would get a shot of us
Sitting so close that we almost got snot on us
Please don't bow in my presence How am I a Legend?
I just got 10 #1 albums Maybe now 11
More hits than a Now! 11
That is no reason to treat me like I'm somehow from outta heaven
Heaven knows that I've made my mistakes
Thank God, what a guy as I say my grace
Who woulda thought by making birds migrate
For the winter I be fly all summer Might I say

[Hook]
Thank you, Thank you, thank you You're far too kind
Hold your applause This is your song not mines
Thank you, Thank you, thank you You're far too kind
Do me a favor, don't do me no favors I'll handle mines

[Verse 2]
Hovi Baby
We are really high, really high tonight
We tip the waiter a hundred dollars
To keep the ice cold, alright?
We the last guys to keep the Wise guys code alive
If I can't live by my word Then I'd much rather die
No no don't thank me, This is just how my suit is stitched
I'm cut from a different cloth, I'm just who the shoe fits
For the Color Of Money like a Tom Cruise flick
'Cept I put 8-balls in corners without using pool sticks
Beautiful music when champagne flutes click
Beautiful women sippin' throught rouge lips
Dangers approaches We're like wait who's this?
Let us save you some trouble son
What size suit you is?
This way after the Ruger shoots through a few clips
You can lay in your casket just as you is
We appreciate the target practices
We'll be sure to send flower baskets kid

[Repeat Hook]

[Verse 3]
I was gonna kill a couple rappers
But they did it to themselves
I was gon' do it with the flow
But they did it with their sales
I was gon' 9/11 'em, but they didn't need the help
And they did a good job them boys is talented as hell
Cuz not only did they brick they put a building up as well
They ran a plane into that building and when that building fell
Ran to the crash site with no masks and inhaled
Toxins deep inside their lungs until both of them was filled
Blew a cloud out like a L into a jar then took a smell
Cuz they heard that second hand smoke kills
Niggas thought they was ill found out they was...ILL
And it's like you knew exactly how I wanted you to feel

[Hook]

[Jay-Z]
We are really high, really high tonight
Lucky Lefty, kiss the wife tonight for me

Storyline

From watching many rap music videos I have noticed that they all have some sort of storyline involving the main character. For mine, the video will revolve around the main singer and his friends, messing about around ringwood and surrounding areas. In the video I will put in a few parody scenes. For example i will put in a pathetic fight scene scene between the main singer and one of his friends. This will be a parody because it goes against the tough guy image of rap stars. For the chorus i will use the shot i have talked about before with the main character in a car park with the camera moving around him. For all the other shots i will mainly use close up shots and mid shots. I will also do cuts in the shots in time with the beat of the music as is normally used in rap videos.

Ideas For video

This shot from a 50 cent video shows him singing in the middle of a car park. The car park is in a very glamorous location, as it is in Monaco. This gave me an idea of having my main singer in a car park, but instead in a car park in ringwood, so therefore it is taking the mick of the normal glamorous locations.

This Wiz Khalifa video shows the main singer driving an expensive car. This therefore can be taken the mick of by having my main singer in a really old, rusty car.

Also in rap videos, like the one above, they show off a lot of bling and so in my video i can show my character having fake, cheap jewelry.

Record label

For my record label I have decided to chose Aftermath Entertainment, this is run by Dr. Dre. a leading producer in rap music. I have chosen this label because of Dr. Dre and his history in the rap music business, producing some of the biggest rap stars of the last century. Acts on the label include eminem and 50 cent and some former members include busta rhymes and the game. It is therefore this experience in producing and distributing rap music that i have decided to chose this record label.

Goldie Lookin Chain

This is a parody of the rnb song 'empire state of mind' by jay-z and Alicia keys. What the parody does very well is copying the original music video. For example it has the same shot types of the lead singer and also has black and white images of Newport, not new york city. It is this part that makes the parody so good, it is the fact that they are filming it in Newport, which when compared to new york city, is not glamorous at all. It is this joking side of the video coupled together with the correct shot types that make the parody very good. This therefore means that for my parody to be good, I'm going to have to have a serious side (good camera shots) and a good joking side ( maybe a not so glamorous location).

A Typical Rnb Video: Features

  1. lots of bling. In rap music videos they try to show off how much money they have by wearing a lot of jewellery. They are also shown driving very flash cars.
  2. Women. The video normally evolves around the main singer wanting a girl or trying to look out for a girl. Also the lyrics are normally about a relationship.
  3. Friends. In the video they usually are shown meeting up with their friends. They are also shown with their friends in a party atmosphere.
  4. Party. A lot of rnb videos take place at a party or in a club.
  5. Dancing. There is normally a lot of dancing, especially with the main singer.
  6. Camera shots. In most videos the camera shots of the main singer are low angle shots. This is used to make the singer look important. The camera also never stops moving and sometimes rotates around the singer as he is singing into the camera. Also sometimes the main singer will stand sideways onto the camera. Changes in shots match the beat of the music.
  7. Location. They are normally filmed in a glamorous location. But sometimes they are filmed in a not so glamorous location to show where the rapper grew up and what life was like for him. The main singer is also shown in a variety of locations.

example of a parody

This example works as a parody as it is the complete opposite of other videos. For example they are dressed awfully, they live with their mums, they have old phones and dont have much money as they by drinks for their date. This goes completly agaisnt all over videos and so works well and is very funny. Also they have the same shot as all other music videos with them in the same location. However because its a parody there clothes and dancing is awful.

examples of RnB videos

This is a very typical RnB video. This is because they are in a very glamorous location, dress in plenty of bling, have a lot of money and are hanging around with there mates. Looking at the filming of it i noticed that the camera always moved and also they have a few slow motion shots. Also they continuously go back to one shot of the lead singer in a square singing into the camera with the camera moving around him. This style of shot can be used in my music video to clearly show the main singer. There are plenty of components in this that can be used as a parody, for example driving a cheap car, cheap tacky clothes and with no friends.

This is another very typical RnB video, with again a lot of bling, a fast car and mates. A very interesting point i noticed was how again they had a shot of the main singer in another location singing with the camera panning around him. Also the camera is normaly low down, looking up at the singer which makes him seem important. From this i have gathered that this shot of the main singer on his own is very important as it is used a lot in the videos. This means that i will have to exploit this in my parody and use it a lot.

Change In Song

As i was struggling for ideas with my song, as it was an unusual genre and hard to find similar examples, i have decided to change my song. I decided to chose an RnB song. This is because i know the genre very well and also as i have decided to do a parody of rap videos, it is necessary to know the genre well. Also there is plenty of examples of rap videos, so i wont be struggling for ideas. The song i have chosen to use is Thank You by Jay-Z. I have chosen this because it will work well as a paradoy. This is because some of the lyrics i can do literally which will look good in a parody and also the songs chorus is the same the whole way through so i can keep to the same scene in the chorus, so it would be something that it keeps going back on. Also the song has a good beat so it could easily flow between shots.

Record label choice

For my record label choice i have decided to use parlophone records.

Parlophone logo.svg

This is mainly because they specialise in all sorts of music and more importantly jazz. I think my song has a jazz feel to it so to have a label who specialise in jazz is very important. They also are linked to many bands who have similar music to mine, for example the good, the bad & the queen.

Record Labels

When looking at record labels i first looked at artists who have similar music to my song. The first band i thought of was moby, he has the same experimental, classical style music. I looked at the labels he was with and found a UK label called mute labels.
Mute records.jpg

They specialise in experimental, unusual music, which is like my song. The parent company of this label is EMI.
EMI logo

It is a multinational music company headquartered in London, United Kingdom. It is the fourth-largest business group and family of record labels in the recording industry and one of the "big four" record companies. This does mean then that maybe mute labels is not so independent.
Another similar artist is danger mouse. He worked with Danielle luppi on the album Rome, which is very similar to my music. When looking at danger mouse i looked at what label the album Rome was on, which was Parlophone.
Parlophone logo.svg

Parlophone specialise in a variety of different acts but are largely involved with jazz. My song has a bit of jazz in it so maybe this label may suit my song. However again parlophone's parent company is EMI.
Another similar artist i thought of was Shirley bassey, especially as she sung some bond songs which i think my song is very similar to. The first record label i came across was Philips.
Philips logo.svg

They specialise in classical music, which i believe my song has a hint of. They also have a parent company in the form of universal music group.

Idea

The idea i am going to use for my video is to film the band recording in the studio. It will be shots of the band playing their instruments as they record the song and as well of them relaxing and editing their songs. Then as a backstory there will be different single shots of dark, sillouhette objects which will add to the coolness, old feel of the music. For the filming of the band in the studio i will put an effect on it to make it look like it is filmed in 16mm film, it will give it a cool retro feel.

Thursday 15 September 2011

filming ideas

Giving the fact that my song has an old feel to it, i thought i may film my video in an old style. This brought me onto 16mm film. This video, 1 minute in, shows 16mm film:

I thought this will give it a nostalgic, old feel and therefore add to the style of the music.

Studio filming

If i was to film my music video in a studio with the band recording it i thought i would have the band members all dressed smartly to give that bond feel and as well having it in black and white to add to the coolness. It also would not be just of them in the studio, it will be of the band outside the studio. As i have already thought of the idea of a main character maybe running away from something or on the run i thought of having a back story to the music video, with alongside the shots of the band recording there song a single character, or the band, walking around a town, with maybe only there silhouettes being filmed.

filming in a studio

This arctic monkeys music video is of the band recording there song in a studio, its not just of them playing there music but of them planning there song and tweaking it.

As i have already thought of my video maybe following a character i thought that my video may follow the recording of the song. I therefore played my song over the arctic monkeys music video and i thought it worked really well especially as my music suggests some sort of journey. I then thought of maybe filming it all in black and white, which i researched earlier, and therefore that will give it the cool feel which i will want in my video.

bond style music videos

As i feel my music has a bond feel to it i thought i will look into the opening credits in bond films. I looked at the opening credits of goldfinger.

Straight away i noticed that it was very dark with only the colours black and gold being used. It also used a lot of silhouettes. This use of silhouettes gives off the idea of secrecy, something that should not be seen. This gave me an idea of my music video following a character that has something to hide or is on the run and using silhouettes to show this secrecy.

Black & White

After watching the danger mouse trailer i thought that filming my own music video in black and white might be a good idea. Filming in black and white gives it a cool and sophisticated feel, as these pictures show:
75-2 in Beautiful Black and White Photography

24 in Beautiful Black and White Photography
Rui2 in Beautiful Black and White Photography

The cool and sophisticated look is something that may fit the feel of my song, so filming in black and white might be a good idea.

Music Video ideas

I chose track 22 for my music video and from my first impression i initially thought it sounded like a bond film song. This lead me onto a album called Rome by Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi.
Review of Rome

This album has songs on it that are very similar to my song so i decided to search them on youtube to see their music videos. I watched the trailer for the album on youtube and noticed that it was all filmed in black and white.
